As far back as 1990, the first International Symposium on Waste Management Zagreb was held, thus the organization of this XVI International Scientific and Professional Symposium completes the cycle of30 years of traditionholding such an event. At this gathering, as always, eminent experts and scientists in the field of waste management from South-Eastern Europe gather.

The circular economy emphasizes a new approach to the complete waste management system, and thus additional challenges for all system stakeholders. Today, after a two-year pandemic that unfortunately prevented the 2020 Symposium from being held and the energy and economic global crisis, the waste management system is facing major challenges. Therefore, more than ever, new solutions are required in the waste management sector through the application of new technologies, digitalization of systems, and new approaches in fulfilling the goals of the circular economy and green transition. Therefore, this year's scientific-professional symposium will analyze major changes in the entire waste management system in all segments, with special emphasis on the role of energy recovery in the circular economy, management of all aspects of municipal waste from collection to recycling, and the implementation of the circular economy in the real sector. The war in Ukraine caused problems with energy sources as well as a change in global transport routes, which presents an additional challenge to the circular economy. As part of the symposium, special attention will be given to product manufacturers who, through extended producer responsibility, become an important part of the waste management system and a participant in achieving the goals of the circular economy.

The goal of this symposium is to find high-quality solutions for these pressing problems through the cooperation of the scientific and professional sectors and the economic and communal sectors, which will look at the problem of managing all categories of waste from the perspective of the principles of waste management, the hierarchy of waste management, circular economy, green and digital transition. .
